Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.

The fluid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report initial examinations show the fluid was likely human blood.

"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.

A senior official said the vandalism left him stunned and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
